The National Diet Library Digital Collections provides Keyword Search, Advanced Search etc.
Enter one or more keywords in Japanese characters in the search box.
When entering more than one keyword, separate the words by a space. Any word from the title, the table of contents, or the description as well as the names of the creator or publisher can be used as keywords. Bibliographic ID (*), Persistent ID (**),ISBN and ISSN can also be keywords. You can search keywords in text by checking the "Full text" checkbox.
*A Bibliographic ID is an identifier given to each bibliographic record that can be searched for in The National Diet Library Online Search and Request Service (NDL Online).
**A persistent identifier is an identifier given to each title, in the form of "info:ndljp/pid/{NUMBER}". NUMBER can also be used as a keyword by itself.
You can search targeted materials by access restrictions with checking the checkboxes, "Available Online" ,“Available only at the NDL and partner libraries" and "Available only at the NDL". If you are interested in all titles, please select all checkbox.
*About Historical Recordings, you can listen to all recordings (included NDL only tag recordings) in the participating libraries of the Historical Recordings Streaming Service to Libraries.
You can restrict the search range to a specific collection by selecting a collection from the pull-down menu.
If more than one keyword is entered, the search results will be a list of items which contain all the keywords at some place in their metadata. Keyword(s) will be highlighted in the results.
In the "Search Results," different volumes of the same periodical will be listed if the item contains the keyword in the title, the publisher name etc. Please click on "Aggregate items of the same title" from the left column, to curtail individual volume data.
The advanced search interface will be opened if you click on "Advanced Search" on the right side of keyword search box.
Please choose the material type from the menu bar at the top, and then specify the search parameters. Different material types have different parameter sets.
If you choose "ALL", you can search by parameters explained below.

These functions are only available in the fields "Title", "Creator", and "Publisher".
Enter the era name in the keyword field of the Advanced Search of the Rare books and Old items.
Example: When "慶應" is entered in the keyword field, the results will include titles published in the 慶應年間 (Keio period, 1865-1868).
The collection search interface will be opened if you click on "List" link on top page. First, select the target group from "Digitized Contents" and "Online publications". (See below)
If you choose "Digitized Contents", you will see a list of material types on the left. Three numbers in brackets separated by /, following the names of each material type. The number on the left is the quantity of items available online, the number on the middle is the quantity of items Available only at the NDL and its partner libraries or to official registered users in Japan , the number on the right is the quantity of the all digitized items. Please click on the number to browse.
If you click the triangle to the left of the category, you can display its sub-collections.
Example: To search Nishiki-e which are available online, please click on the number on the left.
The "Theme Search" can be opened by clicking on "here".
Contents are categorized according to the Nippon Decimal Classification (NDC).

The National Diet Library Digital Collections can be searched with a single click (in Japanese).
In the Search Results, up to 3,000 records will be shown per one search. If more than 3,000 records are hit, please refine the results using the facets in the left-hand column.

The Content Viewer can be used to view materials and their bibliographic information retrieved in search results. The Content Viewer for PC is explained in Section 2-2 below.
The Content Viewer for Tablet/Smartphone opens in full-screen mode. For help operating the Content Viewer for Tablet/Smartphone, please tap anywhere on the viewer screen to display the menu bar, then tap the Instructions icon, which is displayed as a question mark (?).
The Content Viewer for PC layout comprises three areas: (a) Bibliographic Information Area, (b) Content Area, and (c) Title Area.
You can see bibliographic information about the item here. Click on the tabs to select the information you want to see from "Analyses"(a-3), "Table of Contents"(a-2), and "Metadata"(a-1). You can change the width of area by dragging the right-edge.

② A Print/Save window will open. After specifying “all frames” or the frame numbers to specific individual images, click either the Creating PDF or the Print Adjust button. Click the Creating PDF button to save or print images without modification. (Proceed to step 3-3. Print/Save.) Click the Print Adjust button to open the Print Modification window and adjust the print parameters. (Proceed to step 3-2. Print Modification.)
Use the Print Modification window to adjust print parameters, including rotating the image, cropping the image, and adjusting the brightness or other image properties. You can adjust the parameters for each image individually or use ⑤ Apply Settings to All Frames button to adjust all images at once.

Please print the images in PDF format by using a web browser, PDF viewer, or other suitable software. The procedure to save, open, and print PDF files varies according to the software you use.
